Magic Realism Portraits
Lindsey's Magic Realism Portraits are based on illusion. They all have magical elements that appear in an otherwise realistic setting. “My goal is to demonstrate an altered reality” says Lindsey. “I try to provoke thought and to move people. I believe that an illusion is what the eye sees and magic is the feeling the viewer gets. My purpose is to evoke that magic in everyone. I love to observe people viewing the pieces. I watch them look at a piece, then look again; then smile and touch it to make sure what they are seeing is actually there. The best part is watching them do it again and again to each piece.”
The two questions people most often ask Lindsey about her work are: one, “Where do your ideas come from?” and two, “How do you do that?” She explains, “I just see things in my mind – images and characters; different things. My ideas are comprised of several pieces of a puzzle that come together and tell a story. Sometimes it's a song that inspires me or an idea in a book; then I'll sit down and hammer it out to make sense of what I am seeing in my mind's eye and what I am feeling emotionally. I never actually know how I am going to execute an idea until I'm in it. Anything is possible so there is always a way to illustrate whatever I imagine. The secret is to have your mind, body and spirit work as one then put forth the energy and the mind-set to accomplish your goal.”
Lindsey's passion outside of photography is transpersonal psychology and physics. In her Magic Realism series she has combined her passions and come up with a form of photography that can be used in popular culture throughout magazines and celebrity portraiture.
